Stigmata

2023

Stigmata (2023) is a 2-dimensional sculpture of interconnected 2.5-inch clear acetate squares with black printed letters, joined by metal jump rings. The piece explores barriers and the modern figurative meaning of stigma that refers to negative and or shameful culturally constructed ideas that are associated to something or someone. The sculpture constitutes a chain mail as an interconnected barrier of words that highlight emotively loaded words that can stigmatise, exclude and isolate. It also points to how language can be employed to create barriers that hinders progressive and inclusive debate.
