Stigmata 2.0

Stigmata 2.0 (2023) is a 2-dimensional interconnected sculpture of 2.5-inch clear acetate squares with black printed letters, joined by metal jump rings. Stigmata 2.0 is a development from Stigmata, that further explores how directed language can stigmatise its recipient. Emerging as a new artwork, in the form of a cascading curtain, Stigmata 2.0 evidence’s the multifaceted nature of stigma as it reflects how language evolves over time respective of changed meanings that serve to create new barriers.

Stigmata 2.0’s increased height plays with physical barriers, emphasising the obstacles within modern society and in its presentation offers an inside and outside; a right way and a wrong way to read the words presented. In this regard and standing at the height of an average person the artwork, as an initially largely ethereal object in fact infers inaccessibility as its active presence makes it an obstacle to navigate. It asks the audience to pinpoint the narrative and demands them to confront societal and internal stigma.
